On Friday June 6th, Ali Arant will be returning to Columbia for the first time since the release of her Woodshed Archive Records EP, “June July.” Ali, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, started inhaling and playing folk music while she was an undergrad in northwestern Arkansas. She eventually went deeper South, pursuing a PhD in Southern Literature at the University of South Carolina. She moved in the summer of 2013 to take a position teaching English at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY. Before moving, she and Darren Woodlief co-created her debut EP, with musical assistance from Ken Mixon, Dave Holder, and Sean Thomson.
Arant’s vocals are intimate and effortless, lending the songs a gentle and hypnotic pulse that resembles how Nicole Atkins might have turned out if she had hung out more with her early tourmates, The Avett Brothers, instead of moving on to grander pop stylings. – Kevin Oliver, Free Times
For her debut Woodshed session, Ali and Darren will be welcoming a number of musical collaborators and friends. Along with the aforementioned Sean (guitar) and Dave (doghouse bass), they’ll welcome Matt Fenech (drums), Kelley Douglas (vocals), Stephen Stokes (keys), and Zachariah Jones (harmonica).
After Ali’s session, we will rearrange a bit and then reconvene for a Pocket Buddha and friends session featuring the aforementioned musicians along with other Woodshed regulars joining in. We have no idea what will happen and that’s just the way we like it!
