It’s always appreciated to receive a shoutout for a Woodshed Archive broadcast and thanks to Kevin Oliver of the Free Times, the word is out that Wednesday night at Utopia Food & Spirits and online at woodshedarchive.org/live is this week’s place to be:

When Gram Parsons invented his “Cosmic Americana”, it was bands like Devils In Disguise that he had in mind, combining loose-knit ensemble playing with plenty of twang and bluesy grit. The folks at Woodshed Archive will be on hand as part of a new series at Utopia, recording the show and broadcasting it online — part of their ongoing efforts to document the area’s live music scene at woodshedarchive.org. – K. Oliver

Ten years ago, after David Hane’s former music project disbanded, he formed a new band with Michael Edge that had just what he wanted in sound and song. All that was missing was the perfect band name. So he asked advice from Uncle Gram, WUSC’s recently retired long time DJ and host of the Saturday morning Americana radio show The Red Bank Bar & Grill, who just happens to be a human encyclopedia of all things Gram Parsons. Uncle Gram suggested a few names, one of which was Devils in Disguise, a variation of the Gram Parsons’ lyric and tune, Devil in Disguise. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Today’s Devils in Disguise is comprised of its original members, David Hane and Michael Edge, with the added talents of LJ Errante, Marv Ward, and Andrew Hoose. Performing and headlining at many regional festivals, including the annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull in Waycross, GA for the last few years, is a testament to their prowess and popularity around the Southeast. Woodshed Archive is proud to be recording, broadcasting, and archiving this special live session at Utopia.

Honky Tonk……..Cosmic Americana at its finest!!!
Devils in Disguise — While both their name and their history as a Gram Parsons cover band suggest a level of sonic indebtedness to the founder of Cosmic American Music, these local stalwarts are definitely not slouching either. Their original material has the fire of alt-country acts like The Backsliders or Alejandro Escovedo, while the group’s adept songwriting talents and powerful close-harmony vocals one-up so many similar bands exploring the same terrain. So while the city is rife with varying takes on the roots-rock formula, it’s worth noting that these guys are sonically more the standard-bearers than anybody else. – K. Petersen, The Free Times (Aug 03, 2011)
